Being an educator for 30 years gave me an opportunity to make an impact on the lives of children.  My North Star has always been to protect children, to have a positive influence on them, to nurture them and to invest in their development.   In 2020, the world seemed to turn upside down and I watched as my fourth-grade students became confused, anxious, fearful, and emotionally distraught. Events such as the pandemic, death, job loss, racial tension, and protests were having a mental impact on society. I knew my students needed a place and a space where we could gather and have open, honest discussions. I decided to establish a community garden, a space where all people, no matter their background, race, or beliefs could come together to talk about life perspectives, share personal stories, exchange ideas, learn from each other and plant a garden.   My dream is for this garden to become a beacon of light, love, hope and unity. A place where various issues can be discussed freely without a person being stigmatized or labeled if their opinion differs from others. We must adapt to this changing world or become extinct. Adaptation is about developing physical traits, behavioral traits, and psychological traits that will help with survival.  Pigmentation is a natural physical adaptation of humans.  Let us stop focusing on the skin we are in but let us focus on the growth of our character. Civilizations evolve and develop when the citizenry behave in a civil manner, collaborating, respecting one another, and loving each other despite having opposing opinions.  Instead of demonizing each other and creating enemies. Let's create partnerships, teams, and families. In the production of a plentiful harvest, we become the good, we become part of the solution. Together we act with boldness and determination in removing the weeds of racism and injustice.

Sara Eskelson is a co-founding member of “Sowing Seeds of Change.” She was profoundly affected by her friendship with Adrienne Scott-Ellis and Doctor Jackie Thompson in the Davis County School District. As a person that wants to see fellow humans protected  "with liberty and justice for all", she wants to help others have a safe place to learn, educate, and express their feelings. In her journey of anti-racism, she believes that if we are unable to learn history in its entirety, we are going to repeat the wrong doing of the past. She and her husband have raised three amazing girls with the idea that service to our fellow humans is the change she wishes to see in the world.  She has a Bachelor of Science in Early and Elementary Education from Weber State University, and is a 5th grade general education teacher in the Davis County School System
